What is ‘Arts Therapy’?

Arts therapy uses the unique and predominantly nonverbal elements of creative art-making for insight and transformation. The language of the arts – colour, shape, line, symbol, movement, sound, music, texture, poetry – speak to us in ways that mere words cannot, helping us to connect with unconscious thoughts and feelings, thus aiding personal growth, self-expression, and wellness.

Arts therapy is a powerful approach to healing and personal growth because:
  • Art making is for everyone – we are all creative beings and all creative expression is acceptable;
  • It is a dynamic, action-oriented, present-focussed and experiential process that allows you to participate in your own healing;
  • Art creation is a deeply satisfying hands-on activity which can actually increase brain levels of serotonin;
  • Creativity is a powerful way to express, understand and release emotions; and
  • Art-forms are able to express many complexities simultaneously and these paradoxical elements may help you better understand and integrate conflicting feelings and experiences.
